Gradient Ascendant is a newsletter about AI/ML research, applications, prospects, weirdness, cultural impact, and history, highly opinionated yet reasonably technically rigorous, because AI is — by far — today’s most interesting technology wavefront. New posts/series are planned for every two weeks; subscribe away.

My background is here; briefly, I'm an engineer, journalist, and author. (Most recently, my science fiction novel Exadelic was published by Tor Books. It too is about AI.) I’m also a former CTO, startup co-founder, and archivist.

As is probably apparent, I am increasingly obsessed with AI. I have never seen a field which moves so rapidly, or one in which unexpected mindblowing breakthroughs occur so frequently. Gradient Ascendant is written in large part to help me figure things out myself, and I’ll doubtless make mistakes along the way; sorry in advance. But sign up and I’ll do my best to help navigate this strange and brave new world.
